The right colour makes a ponytail extension look like your own hair. In our shop you will find many shades – from platinum and light blondes through browns to black, as well as ombre, sombre, highlighted and multi-tonal variants. Here's how to choose the right one.
Compare with the hair that stays visible
Once the ponytail is tied, what you mainly see is the hair brushed back on the crown and at the sides. Compare the ponytail colour with that hair – not with your ends, which will be hidden underneath anyway.
Check the colour in daylight
Artificial light and phone screens can change how a shade looks. It's best to compare colours by a window, in natural light. Our product photos show the ponytail from several sides – take a look at all of them.
Warm or cool shade?
If your hair has golden, honey or reddish tones, look for shades described as warm (e.g. warm blonde, golden blonde). If it's ashy, pearly or silvery, choose cool-toned shades (e.g. ash, pearl or platinum blonde). We state the tone in the product names.
Ombre, sombre, highlights and multi-tonal shades
- Ombre – a distinct transition from a darker top to lighter ends; a good choice if you have darker roots.
- Sombre – a softer, more subtle colour transition.
- Highlights and multi-tonal shades – several shades in one ponytail; they make it easier to match hair that isn't one uniform colour.
A ponytail as a contrast
The colour doesn't have to match perfectly – a ponytail can also be a deliberate accent. Copper, burgundy, platinum or red ombre are a way to create a bold look without dyeing your own hair.
Can you change the shade of a ponytail?
To a small extent, yes: toners, colour rinses, colour-depositing masks and purple shampoos will help refresh or cool down the colour. Don't use permanent dyes – they can damage the fibres. Not sure? Write to us via the contact form, ideally with a photo of your hair in daylight. You will find all shades in the Ponytails category.
