Putting on a ponytail extension takes a few minutes and doesn't require a trip to the hairdresser. Below we describe how to do it step by step for both attachment versions: on a mesh base and with a claw clip. If you haven't decided which one to choose yet, first read our comparison of mesh-base and claw clip ponytails.
Before you start
- Brush out the ponytail extension – a straight one with a boar bristle brush, a curly one only with your fingers or when wet, with conditioner.
- Have a hair tie, a few bobby pins and a brush ready to smooth your own hair.
- Decide how high you want to wear the ponytail: worn high, it looks striking and evening-ready; lower down, it looks classic and everyday.
Mesh-base ponytail
- Brush your own hair smoothly back and tie it with a hair tie into a tight ponytail at the chosen height.
- If your ponytail is long, twist it or pin it into a small bun – this makes it easier to hide.
- Place the mesh of the ponytail extension over your own ponytail so that it covers it completely.
- Adjust the ponytail, check that it holds securely and, if needed, secure it with a few bobby pins.
- Hide the join: wrap a thin strand of hair from the ponytail around it and pin the end underneath with a bobby pin.
Claw clip ponytail
- Gather your own hair into a ponytail or small bun and secure it with a hair tie; if your hair is very short, use bobby pins to help.
- Open the claw clip and fasten it at the base of your own ponytail so that it grips the hair together with the hair tie.
- Check that the ponytail holds securely and spread out the strands.
- Just like with the mesh-base version, you can hide the join by wrapping a strand of hair around it.
Tips for a long-lasting result
- The tighter your own ponytail is tied, the more securely the extension stays in place.
- A little gel or hairspray helps smooth the hair at the scalp and tame flyaways.
- You can also turn the ponytail extension into a braid, a bun or an evening updo.
Removing and storing
Remove the ponytail in reverse order, gently and without pulling. After removing it, brush it out and store it in a dry place, ideally in a box, so that it doesn't get tangled or crushed.
